Chapter 89 - Small Village Horrors - Blog Post 21
A dark, small-town mystery steeped in folklore. THE STUDY OF QUIET THINGS is a serialised fiction drama shared one chapter at a time.
This is a serialised fiction. If you haven’t read the previous chapters, you’ll find them here in order, so you can dive right in.
Something terrible has happened.
My fingers are trembling as I type. Autocorrect is having a field day with me. Those red slices beneath the words telling me I’ve done something wrong. They look like bloody slits on the page - a threat of what’s to come.
I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what to do. I hope if I keep typing, I can make sense of what has happened. But there is no sense. There is no nothing.
It’s all been a terrible mistake. All of it.
I should never have told the story. I should never have tried to find answers. I should never have asked Jessica for help.
The sun has gone out.
The stars have fallen from the sky.
And now there is only darkness.
I’ve made the others promise to never tell this story. We must end this now, once and for all. Forget about it. Move on, like all the dead-eyed brain-numb adults roaming the town with their secret secrets, hoping if they ignore The Calling it will ignore them.
I can’t believe I am going to say this but…
There is great power in silence.

I promise that The Study of Quiet Things would be forever free for readers here on Substack - but if you feel called to support my writing and keep the hearth lit in The Teller’s House, you can buy me a coffee to keep me fuelled.
